A história começa com Alice, entediada, vendo um coelho estranhamente trajado passando e descendo buraco abaixo. Ela, com sua curiosidade incontrolável, que inclusive lhe coloca em situações bastante complicadas durante toda aventura, segue o coelho por esse túnel que a conduz a um mundo completamente estranho.
O foco narrativo se divide entre o narrador e a própria personagem principal, o que torna mais fácil para o autor fazer suas considerações de maneira irônica sem perder o tom ingênuo de por ser o ponto de vista de uma criança.
Neste trecho, Alice já se encontra nesse mundo de maravilhas e está intrigada com uma garrafa de conteúdo suspeito com o seguinte dizer: beba-me (drink me). Vejamos o que ela pensa sobre isso:
“It was all very well to say Drink me, but the wise little Alice was not going to do that in a hurry. “No, I’ll look first, she said, and see whether it’s marked poison or not; for she had read several times nice little histories about children who had got burnt, and eaten up by wild beasts and other unpleasant things, all becuse they would not remember the simple rules their friends had taught them: ... and she had never forgotten that if you drink tôo much from a bottle marked as poison, it is almost certain to disagree with you, sooner or later”.
